Welcome to My Aviary!!!

Hello, my name is Susan Henderson!! I am located in a rural area just outside Grand Rapids, MI. After breeding several different types of birds over the years, I have settled on working with my favorites, Lady Gouldian Finches. After some thought, I have decided to call my aviary, Eye Candy Aviary. I think that looking at the beauty of the particular type birds I will be working with is like candy for your eyes. I hope you enjoy my site. Come visit with me and my birds sometime!

My Journey with Birds

Growing up we had a Parakeet named Petey. Back then people didn't know as much about birds and he did not live very long. My first bird as an adult was a Cockatiel named Kate. We then found her a mate that we named Radar. He was very wild but my husband tamed him wearing gloves. We lost him when he took a little too good of care of his babies and didn't keep any food for himself. That was quite sad as he turned out to be a very nice bird. Besides Cockatiels we also had Zebra Finches, Parakeets, a couple Senegal Parrots named Toby and Max and even a pair Timneh African Greys. We moved and started raising a family so I got out of birds for a few years.

The addiction began once again when I rescued a couple of baby Mourning Doves. We then started with Ringneck Doves and Button Quail. I raised them for a few years but then got hooked on the beautiful Finches I was seeing at nursing homes in those huge beautiful aviaries. I have had several different kinds including Owls, Strawberries, Cordon Bleus, Gouldians, Zebras, Lavender Waxbills, and even Canaries.

My personal favorites are the Lady Gouldians. I got my first two in a group of birds that I bought. One was an adult male and the other a baby not yet colored up. The baby ended up being a Red Head White Breast Green Back male named Woody. He is the foundation to my line today. I have his son, Woody II, who is beautifully carrying on Woody's heritage with his own offspring now. He is pictured with one of his daughters on the right.
